WOUND CARE
INTRODUCTION
Dr. Septon has sampled or removed your skin lesion and has placed stitches at the site of the wound. Immediately after the procedure, the skin of the wound is very delicate. The stitches will help strengthen the newly-formed wound as it heals and matures into a scar.
Proper care of your wound is important to prevent it from becoming infected and to help it heal.
AFTERCARE
You have been given samples of antibiotic ointment (usually Bacitracin) and adhesive dressings. All other supplies used in routine wound care may be obtained without a prescription at your local pharmacy.
Leave your dressing from the physician's office on for 24 hours. If you need to get the area wet in the first 24 hours, first replace your bandage with a waterproof bandage.
After 24 hours, clean the wound twice daily gently washing it with either mild soap and water or hydrogen peroxide (to dilute hydrogen peroxide, mix 1/2 cup of peroxide with 1/2 cup of tap water). Use a cotton-tipped swab (Q-tip) to gently remove any dried blood or crust. Dry the wound gently with a piece of gauze. Then apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment and a fresh dressing. When showering or taking a bath or swimming, remove the regular dressing and replace it with a waterproof dressing. After drying off, remove the waterproof dressing and care for your wound as above. Then apply a regular bandage.
It is normal to see a few drops of blood on the bandage for the first few days. If there is more bleeding, apply firm pressure on the wound with an ice pack for 20 minutes. Do not dab the area. Rather, keep constant pressure and do not peek for 20 minutes.
We ask that you not engage in exercise or strenuous activity at least until we see you back for stitch removal and likely for 2-3 weeks after the stitches are removed. Wounds closed with stitches are very weak and can easily open if under stress or stretching. This delicate period usually lasts until the stitches are removed. Even after this crucial period has passed, scars can still spread if placed under tension.
If you must exercise, please engage in easy walking (unless your lesion is on the leg or foot) one week after your surgery. Please refrain from lifting weights and doing other activities which may stress your wound, such as pushups or sit-ups.
PAIN
There may be some pain after your surgery. Non-prescription painkillers are usually sufficient. In the first 24 hours, acetaminophen (Tylenol) is preferred. The appropriate dose is listed on the bottle. After 24 hours, you can switch to aspirin, ibuprofen, or a similar medication. Take as directed on the bottle.
OF COURSE, DO NOT TAKE ANY MEDICATION TO WHICH YOU ARE ALLERGIC.

CUIDADO DE HERIDAS
INTRODUCCION
Dr. Septon ha tomado una muestra o a removido una lesion de su piel y ha cocido su herida. Inmediatamente despues de este procedimiento la piel de la herida es muy delicada. Las puntadas van a ayudar a que la herida se cure y se cree una cicatriz.
El buen cuidado de la herida es muy importante para prevenir una infeccion y ayudar a que la herida se cure.
CUIDADO
Se le han dado muestras de unguento antibiotico (por lo general Bacitracin) y vendas adesibles. Usted puede comprar mas unguento antibiotico y vendas sin una receta en su farmacia.
Deje la venda que le puseo el doctor por 24 horas. Si necesita mojar el area durante las primeras 24 horas, primero cambie la venda por una que sea contra agua.
Despues de las primeras 24 horas usted debe cambiar estas vendas dos veces al dia. Quite la venda y limpie el area suavemente con un Q-tip mojado en hidrogeno peroxido diluido (para diluir el peroxido, mezcle 1/2 taza de peroxido con 1/2 taza de agua) o con jabon suave y agua, para quitar la costr o sangre seca. Seque la herida con un poco de gaza y despues re-aplique unguento y vuelva a cubrir la piel con una venda adesiva.
Cuando se bane o nade, asequrese de ponerse una venda que sea contra agua. Despues de que se seque, vuelva a limpiar la herida, poner unguento y cubrala con una venda normal.
Es normal que haya un poco de sangre en la venda durante los primeros dias. Si sangra mas, aplique presion firme en la herida con un paquete de hielo por 20 minutos. Por ningun motivo toque o rasque el area, simplemente mantenga presion por 20 minutos.
Le pedimos que no haga ejercicio o actividades pesadas hasta que lo volvamos a ver y le quitemos las puntadas. Las puntadas se le quitran 2-3 semanas despues del procedimiento. Las heridas que se cierran con puntadas son muy debiles y se pueden abrir facilmente si se estiran. Este periodo delicado suele durar hasta que se le hayan quitado las puntadas. Aun despues de que este periodo delicado haya pasado la cicatriz puede extenderse si hay tension sobre la herida.
Si usted debe hacer ejercicio o actividades pesadas, por favor camine (a menos de que la lesion sea en su pierna o pie) por una semana despues de su cirugia. Por favor no levante pesas o haga otras actividades que causen estres sobre la herida (sentallidas o lagartijas).
DOLOR
Despues de una cirujia suele haber un poco de dolor. Analgesicos que no requieren receta son, por lo general, suficientes para controlar el dolor. Es preferible que use acetaminophen (Tylenol) durante las primeras 24 horas. La cantidad que debe tomar esta indicada en la botella de la medicina. Despues de las primeras 24 horas, usted puede tomar aspirinas, ibuprofen o cualquier otra medicina similar.
